Camel Symbols in Sandplay Therapy
Lee Hye-Ran

Wang Young-Hee
Abstract
Jung states that the unconsciousness creates a symbol, which then tries to convey meaning to the individual through images when the consciousness ignores the unconscious elements of life. Figures that a client uses in sandplay therapy enables the individual to activate the expression of imagery and to thereby produce unique symbolic representations according to the individual``s needs as they grow and change. Because the image is related to an archetypical image, ongoing transformation may arise when the consciousness attempts to correctly interpret the meaning of the symbolic image from an archetype and to integrate it into the ego. This study explored the symbolic meanings of camels as they appeared in the sand trays. The biological characteristics of camels indicate that they have optimized their body structures and capabilities to the harsh environment of the desert. The camel, in both narratives or Arab literatures variously appears as a representation of sanctity and mystery, maternity, stupidity, the will to survive, being able to soothe sorrow, and the pursuit of a perfect life. Camels in the Bible were a symbol of temperance, royalty, obedience, humility, endurance, politeness, and wealth. In the philosophy of Nietzsche, a camel, the first of the three stages in human psychic changes, represents respect and awe, the spirit to bear a heavy burden, and the spirit of obedience. With knowledge of such varied meanings of the camel symbol, the therapists were able to understand what the camels in the sand trays represented. According to our results, camels represent a companion, a guide, a comforter, as well as the characteristics of adaptation, obedience, endurance, and maternity. It is expected that in turn this may assist in the clients¡¯ healing and positive growth.
